A New Look for Your Skin—Preventing and Removing Wrinkles?
After the age of 25, the skin begins to age, and wrinkles gradually appear. The areas most prone to wrinkles are typically the forehead, around the eyes, around the mouth, and the neck. Causes of Wrinkles: Wrinkles form when the skin is exposed to external environmental factors, leading to the production of free radicals. These free radicals damage collagen and active substances within the normal cell membrane tissue, causing oxidative stress that results in uneven, ridged lines on the skin’s surface. The skin consists of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat layer. The dermis contains collagen, elastin, and other fibers; these elements keep the skin smooth, youthful, and elastic, but they are also susceptible to damage from UVA, UVB, ozone, and other oxidizing factors. Among these, UVA (320–400 nm) penetrates deep into the dermis and subcutaneous fat layer; UVB (290–320 nm) reaches the epidermis; and ozone generally only penetrates the stratum corneum.
Experts point out that around the age of 25, fine wrinkles and under-eye bags may begin to appear at the corners of the eyes; around age 30, forehead wrinkles increase, crow’s feet appear at the outer corners of the eyes, and wrinkles of varying degrees develop on the upper and lower eyelids; by age 40, the nasolabial folds deepen, fine lines begin to appear at the corners of the mouth, and wrinkles start to form on the neck; by age 50, under-eye bags deepen, lower eyelid wrinkles appear, and wrinkles form on the upper and lower lips; by age 60, elasticity decreases across the entire face, and facial wrinkles deepen.
Classification of Wrinkles: Wrinkles generally appear in the following order: forehead, upper and lower eyelids, outer corners of the eyes, area in front of the ears, cheeks, neck, jawline, and around the mouth. Under normal circumstances, wrinkles are classified into the following categories:
Postural Wrinkles: In areas where the skin is relatively loose, some wrinkles form naturally and may even be present from birth. Early postural wrinkles do not indicate aging; only wrinkles that gradually deepen and become more pronounced are signs of aging.
Dynamic Wrinkles
These result from prolonged contraction of facial muscles and are primarily found as forehead lines caused by the frontalis muscle, glabellar lines caused by the corrugator supercilii muscle, corner-of-the-mouth lines and vertical lip lines caused by the orbicularis oris muscle, and diagonal cheek lines caused by the frontalis and levator labii superioris muscles.
Gravitational Wrinkles
Between the ages of 35 and 40, as the skin and muscles lose elasticity, they gradually sag under the force of gravity and form local folds, resulting in wrinkles. Examples include under-eye bags, sagging skin, and a double chin.
1) Eyelids: Most commonly seen in the outer third of the upper eyelid, where skin sagging occurs due to the gradual laxity of the eyelid and orbicularis oculi muscle; “eye bags” may also form due to orbital fat herniating through the septum;
2) Face: Most commonly found in the lower face, where wrinkles appear due to skin laxity resulting from a reduction in the suborbital fat pad;
Jaw: Commonly seen in the lower jaw area, where a reduction in subcutaneous fat causes the skin to sag, forming a “double chin”;
Neck: After middle age, subcutaneous tissue gradually atrophies and the skin becomes lax. Under the influence of gravity, wrinkles deepen, particularly in the anterior neck region, often forming sagging skin folds along the mid-margin of the platysma muscles on both sides of the neck.
Prevention of Wrinkles Dietary Prevention: Consume as many antioxidant-rich foods as possible, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, green tea polyphenols, and grape polyphenols; reduce the formation of peroxides—the primary cause of free radicals—and avoid them as much as possible to effectively prevent cellular oxidation, such as by smoking less and eating fewer fried foods.
Skincare Prevention: Pay attention to skin hydration; drink 2,000 ml of water daily and carry moisturizing products with you to apply as needed; use exfoliating products in moderation—generally, rough skin, visible pores, and the appearance of blackheads are signs that it’s time to exfoliate; additionally, always use sunscreen to prevent photoaging caused by UV rays.
